Closures announced across Portland as city braces for winter storm

Many K-12 schools let out early on Friday, but now, higher education institutions are shutting down this weekend.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Community College campuses and centers will be closed this weekend, along with other Portland-area institutions, as they brace for freezing temperatures.

Pacific University announced its Forest Grove campus, Hillsboro campus and all healthcare clinics are closed Sunday through Monday.

PCC said Friday that in-person classes, events and activities are canceled Sunday and Saturday, but some classes and services will meet remotely. Portland State University also announced its closure, which will run through Saturday.

Portland Parks and Recreations also announced the closure of all of its community centers, arts centers, indoor sports facilities, permitted field games/practices and tennis center on Saturday. All classes and activities are also canceled for the day.

The Portland Winter Ice Rink and Woodsy Winter Village will be closed Saturday, the city said.

Portland churches Montavilla Church and Portland Area Seventh Day Baptist Church announced closures for Saturday as well, including activities and services.

The exact snow forecast for Portland's upcoming winter storm has been difficult to pin down, but one thing is very certain: large parts of Oregon and Washington will be hit with extremely cold temperatures as Arctic air and gusty east winds combine. Local officials are urging residents to take precautions to avoid risks like frostbite and be on the lookout for signs of hypothermia, which can easily become deadly.
