GRESHAM, Ore. — A man was shot and killed by police at a motel in Gresham on January 9, the Gresham Police Department reported.

The man has been identified as 29-year-old Carlos Corona, police said.

Officers responded to a report that Corona was kicking in a door at the Golden Knight Motel on East Powell Boulevard at 8:14 p.m. A 911 call said person was screaming for help, with another caller reporting that someone was banging on their room door and that something was being thrown through the window, Gresham Police Department said in a statement.

Officers arrived and saw the suspect with a knife, forcing his way into an occupied motel room, police said. The officers then ordered him to drop the knife and warned him that force would be used if he continued, but the suspect did not listen and went into the motel room.

Despite medical assistance, the Corona died at the scene. Officers later recovered the knife used to stab the victim inside the motel room.
