PORTLAND, Ore. — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run incident Tuesday evening in Southeast Portland, prompting a full closure of part of Southeast 122nd Avenue while police investigators review the scene. The closure applies to all lanes of 122nd Avenue between Southeast Main Street and Southeast Market Street, according to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau.

Officers were dispatched to the intersection of 122nd Avenue and Southeast Madison Street at 5:10 p.m. on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Additional reports said that a second vehicle hit the person as well, but the driver of that vehicle remained at the scene, according to the news release.

The incident happened directly in front of Portland Fire & Rescue Station Seven, according to the news release, so paramedics arrived very quickly, but the pedestrian still died at the scene.

The Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team has responded to the scene and is investigating. The surrounding blocks of 122nd Avenue will remain closed while investigators collect evidence.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Traffic Investigations Unit at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 23-332333.

The incident comes after a trio of deadly crashes on Christmas Day — one of which was at a different Southeast 122nd Avenue intersection — that marked 2023 as Portland's deadliest traffic year in three decades. Tuesday's incident is the city's 66th traffic fatality this year and the 26th pedestrian fatality.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
