Driver charged with DUII, reckless driving in fatal car crash near Portland International Airport

The victim died at the scene and has not been identified by police.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A Gresham driver faces multiple charges after a crash Friday night killed one and closed Northeast Marine Drive.

The suspect, Maria I. Moncada, was booked into Multnomah County Detention Center, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). The 22-year-old suspect faces first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants (alcohol) and reckless driving charges.

At 11:25 p.m., Moncada was driving "at a high rate of speed" on Northeast Marine Drive near the Portland International Airport (PDX) when she exited the lane and crashed into the back of a 2015 Fit that was stopped on the shoulder, police said. Moncada then was transported to the hospital with non-threatening life injuries.

The victim died at the scene and has not been identified by police.

The investigation closed Northeast Marine Drive in both directions between Northeast 33rd and Northeast 122nd avenues until 5:45 a.m. Saturday.

PPB said that this is the 13th traffic-related fatality in Portland so far in 2024. This may be a higher number than the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) count, which excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, medical events and deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash.
