Police identify man killed in downtown Portland crash; driver arrested for DUII

Police said the driver had been hospitalized and was booked with DUII charges; he will face more charges after a passenger in the crash died Saturday afternoon.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police have identified the man who died in a downtown Portland crash early Sunday morning as 23-year-old Wael M. Zahran. Three other people were injured in the crash on Southwest Naito Parkway, with the suspect driver facing DUII and assault charges, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

According to police, officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Southwest Naito Parkway and Southwest Columbia Street on Feb. 10 at approximately 2:50 a.m. Two vehicles were involved in the crash, and police found four occupants of the vehicles injured, including one who was suffering life-threatening injuries and pinned in the rear passenger seat.

The person with the life-threatening injuries later died, PPB said, but their identity was withheld until their family could be notified.

Police said the driver, Jacob M. Tabor, was driving southbound on Southwest North Parkway when he collided with another driver, but it was a minor crash and there were no reported injuries. However, Tabor, 46, did not stop, accelerating from the crash and colliding with a 2001 Toyota Camry that was stopped at a red light, which contained three men, including the one who died.

Tabor, of Washington County, was taken to the hospital and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center, charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as two counts of assault in the second degree. PPB said charges will be added due to the death of one of the passengers.

Due to the severity of the injuries, the Traffic Division Major Crash Team responded to investigate the crash, police said. The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) is reporting this incident as the ninth time this year that the Major Crash team has been activated.

During the investigation, Southwest Naito Parkway was closed in both directions between Southwest Jefferson Street to Southwest Clay Street.

Police are asking anyone with information about this crash to e-mail crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov, ATTN: Traffic Investigations Unit and reference case number 23-33222.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
