Southwest Washington man pleads guilty to felony charge for Jan. 6 Capitol breach

Nearly a dozen defendants from Oregon and southwest Washington have been charged for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol.

PORTLAND, Oregon — A Yacolt, Washington, man pleaded guilty to a felony charge of civil disorder for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. 36-year-old Benjamin Silva will be sentenced on Sept. 17, 2024.

Video footage showed Silva with a crowd of rioters confronting police on Jan. 6, 2021. Prosecutors claim Silva joined others in forcefully pushing against a police line near an entrance on the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol building, also known as "the tunnel."

Some of the most violent attacks against police on Jan. 6 occurred at the tunnel. Court documents say that even when rioters were leaving the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol, Silva fought to stay and press forward against police.
