HILLSBORO, Ore. — A man who shot another man several times during a house party in Cornelius has been sentenced to life in prison, according to the Washington County District Attorney's Office.

On Tuesday, a Washington County jury found 20-year-old Cesar Yovanni Alvarez-Alcazar guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon; Alvarez-Alcazar pled no contest to the latter charge prior to the trial. The judge sentenced Alvarez-Alcazar to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years, the Washington County District Attorney's Office said.

On Feb. 6, 2022, Alvarez-Alcazar, then 19 years old, was "heavily intoxicated" at a house party in Cornelius when he got into an argument with several partygoers, including the victim, 20-year-old Jose Angel Rodriguez-Sanchez. Alvarez-Alcazar shot Rodriguez-Sanchez several times, killing him, and fled the scene before officers arrived. Alvarez-Alcazar also fired a shot at another partygoer, but they were not injured.

Several months later, Alvarez-Alcazar was then arrested by officers from the Salem Police Department during a traffic stop, according to the Washington County District Attorney's Office. Police found a loaded handgun hidden under the driver’s seat with 400 rounds of ammunition and body armor.

Alvarez-Alcazar will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence, said the Washington County District Attorney's Office.
