1 dead, suspect arrested for manslaughter in crash in Buckman neighborhood

Portland police say the crash happened at Southeast Belmont and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard early Sunday morning.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man died in a crash in Portland's Buckman neighborhood on Feb. 25, and a driver was arrested for manslaughter, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

Around 2:45 a.m., police responded to a crash involving a pedestrian and car, along with reports of gunshots being fired near Southeast Belmont Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

According to PPB, officers found a man with a bike who sustained serious injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he died. Police have identified him as 48-year-old David R. Bentley.

Investigators believe numerous witnesses and people with information about what happened fled the scene without talking to police.

Police said 22-year-old Shane McKeever, the driver of the car involved, ran away and was detained by bystanders a few blocks away until officers arrived near Southeast Water Avenue and Southeast Belmont Street.

McKeever faces reckless driving and first-degree manslaughter charges, according to PPB. Investigators also believe someone fired shots at McKeever and are now looking for that person.

PPB said it's critical that investigators are able to speak to everyone who has first-hand information to ensure they have a full picture of what took place and who was involved.

Anyone who has information about this crash and has not talked to police is asked to e-mail crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov, ATTN: traffic investigations unit and refencing case number 24-46438.

This is the 14th traffic-related fatality in Portland so far this year. That may be a higher figure than the Portland fatal crashes counted by the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA). NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, medical events, and deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash.
