Nike temporarily relocating downtown flagship store to nearby Pioneer Place mall during renovations

Nike said it would temporarily close its store on SW 5th Avenue next spring as it renovates the space, and move across the street to Pioneer Place.

PORTLAND, Ore. — This story is courtesy of KGW's news partner Portland Business Journal.

Nike will temporarily take space at the Pioneer Place mall while its flagship store at the Kress building undergoes remodeling, the Business Journal has learned.

The Business Journal and others on Thursday reported that permit paperwork had been filed for what looked to be a new, two-floor Nike (NYSE: NKE) store inside the multi-block mall at 700 S.W. Fifth Ave. Pioneer Place is across the street from the Kress Building, where Nike has had its store since 2011. The latter covers two floors and a mezzanine.

Project Coordinator Carrie Heimann, of the Portland Bureau of Development Services, on Friday morning said that Nike is doing tenant improvements in the Pioneer Place atrium. Heimann said it is a temporary space while the athletic wear company remodels its space inside Kress, work that has not yet begun.

On Friday afternoon, Nike confirmed it would temporarily close the store at 638 S.W. Fifth Ave. next spring "as we renovate and enhance our store experience for consumers.

"To best serve downtown Portland, we are in the process of opening a temporary store in nearby Pioneer Square (sic) so consumers can still shop the brand they love," the company said in an emailed statement.

A representative of Downtown Development Group, which owns the Kress building, declined to comment.
