Cloudy skies start Memorial Day weekend, but the sun will return

For those counting on a clear three-day weekend for travel plans, it was a lackluster start. But things should get progressively better.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Memorial Day weekend kicked off Friday afternoon with heavy clouds and some scattered showers across Oregon and southwest Washington, but the National Weather Service (NWS) says the weekend is "far from a washout."

Rain totals are minimal; the NWS in Portland reported only trace amounts Friday, and the light shower pattern will continue through Saturday and Sunday morning.

Temperatures will stay on the cooler side as well, with forecasted highs in the 60s for the Willamette Valley and the 50s along the Oregon Coast.

Warmer and drier conditions come into play late Sunday afternoon, making Monday the warmest of the week. Temperatures will jump into the mid to high 70s.
