Real ID required to fly in the US starting in 2025: What Oregonians should know

Starting in 2025, TSA will no longer accept a standard Oregon driver's license or ID card to pass through airport security checkpoints.

SALEM, Ore. — On May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration will no longer accept a standard Oregon driver's license or ID card to pass through security checkpoints at U.S. airports.

The new ID requirement also applies at other federal facilities such as military bases. Oregon DMV set up a website with more details to help navigate the process.

WHAT IS A REAL ID?

Real ID is a state-issued driver license, instruction permit or ID card that meets the federal requirements set by the Real ID Act. Oregon offers both a standard card and a Real ID Act-compliant card.

Both types of cards allow you to legally drive and prove identity and age for things such as cashing a check.

WHERE WILL A REAL ID BE NEEDED?

If there's any chance you might travel by air in the future, it's best to start planning now, Oregon DMV said. Without a federally acceptable ID, people will be not be able to board an airplane for travel within the U.S. or enter secure federal facilities that require ID for entry beginning May 7, 2025.

HOW MUCH WILL A REAL ID COST?

To get the Real ID version of a license or ID card, it will cost an extra $30. Those funds help the DMV to operate the Real ID process.

HOW DO YOU GET A REAL ID?

Appointments will need to be made on the Oregon DMV's website or people can drop by a DMV office.

You can't change to a Real ID online. Applications must be in person.

"As the enforcement dates gets closer, we know there's going to be a big rush at the DMV's so get in sooner than later. If you're license is up for renewal, you can renew up to a year in advance," said Amy Joyce from the Oregon DMV.

The DMV said it's best to plan at least three months ahead to make sure you receive it before the deadline next year.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED FOR A REAL ID APPOINTMENT?

For the Oregon DMV appointment, people will need to take proof of identity such as a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, citizenship or naturalization certificate. You will also need your social security number, a proof of address (two printed documents that show name and current Oregon residential home address) and $30 payment.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A REAL ID, CAN YOU STILL FLY DOMESTICALLY?

Those who don't get a Real ID can use their passport, passport card, or global entry card to get on a flight.

"As of the enforcement date, which is May 7, 2025, you're going to need something that's Real ID compliant," said Joyce.
