PORTLAND, Ore. — The Port of Portland will delay opening its new main terminal at the Portland International Airport (PDX). The original opening date was set for the end of May.

The Port of Portland’s chief projects officer, Vince Granato, issued a statement, saying,

"Safety is our guiding principle at the Port of Portland, so we’re extending the PDX construction timeline to ensure that the over 900 local craftspeople working at the airport every day know their safety comes before schedule. While there were no injuries, we saw a couple of close calls on the job site recently that encouraged us to pause work through yesterday.

"The pause gave the construction team time to rest, recuperate and refocus, and us time to start a bottoms-up look at the work, adjust the schedule where necessary and continue to put people first. We’re proud of our local construction team’s exceptional safety record as we work to bring the new PDX designs to life for our region and will share an updated opening timeline as soon as it’s finalized."

There had been a pause in work on Friday through Sunday, the Port of Portland confirmed.

The new main terminal is the centerpiece of a broader overhaul that the Port of Portland refers to as PDX Next, which got underway in 2019. The overhaul also includes the new Concourse B — an expanded replacement for the former Concourse A at the southern corner of the airport, a new car rental center and a redesigned transit hub.

Most of the other components have already opened; the main terminal is the last piece of "phase one" and was scheduled to open in late May, the Port of Portland initially said, though with further construction in the works until the end of 2025.

"We anticipate having an updated opening timeframe to share by late March," said Allison Ferre of the Port of Portland.
