Road work closes I-84 west at I-205 through weekend

The westbound lanes of I-84 will be closed at the I-205 interchange starting Friday afternoon until Monday at 5 a.m.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Drivers in Portland should avoid I-84 westbound at the I-205 interchange this weekend as all lanes of the interstate will close while crews make road repairs. It's the first of several weekend closures expected this summer.

Starting at noon on Friday, June 23 through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 26, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will be closing the lanes for bridge deck and bridge joint repairs. ODOT said this work will extend the life of the freeway and last 20 to 30 years.

Drivers heading west on I-84 will be detoured to I-205 southbound where they can follow signs to I-84 westbound (Exit 21B). The exit to I-205 north will be open during the weekend closure.

Several on-ramps leading to the closure area will also be closed over the weekend:

  • I-84 westbound on-ramp at Northeast 102nd Avenue (closed at night only).
  • I-84 westbound on-ramp at Northeast 181st Avenue.
  • I-84 westbound on-ramp at Fairview Parkway.

ODOT has not released official dates for other weekend closures but said the next one may happen as soon as Friday, July 7 to Monday, July 10. Construction work should be wrapped up by the fall, ODOT said.
