Pedestrian killed in fatal Southeast Portland crash identified

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police identified a man struck and killed in a fatal crash on November 14 in Southeast Portland as 38-year-old Nicholas Depaolo, police reported on Saturday.

The crash happened Nov. 14 at 6:13 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Southeast McLoughlin Boulevard near Cora Street. When officers arrived, they found Depaolo dead in the street. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

The Portland Police Bureau continues to investigate the fatal crash. Anyone with information about this crash who has not already contacted police is asked to email information to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov with attention: Traffic Investigations Unit and Case No. 23-296328.

Traffic deaths in Portland this year

This is the 61st fatal traffic-related crash in Portland in 2023, with 21 of those crashes involving pedestrians, according to Portland police.

There are often slight discrepancies between PPB's numbers and those kept by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which excludes any crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles or deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash, according to PPB. NHTSA's data shows 57 traffic deaths in Portland this year.

Traffic deaths in Portland have reached identical three-decade highs over the last two years, marking 63 deaths — based on the Portland Bureau of Transportation's numbers — in both 2021 and 2022.
