Longtime Tigard boys basketball coach dies

Shawn Alderman coached Tigard High School boys basketball for nearly 25 years, leading the team to a state championship in 2002.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A longtime Tigard boys basketball coach and high school teacher, Shawn Alderman, has died, the Tigard-Tualatin School District confirmed on Monday. 

Alderman, 52, had been coaching the Tigard High School boys basketball team for 25 years and working for in the Tigard-Tualatin School District as a health and physical education teacher for nearly 30 years.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the Alderman family and friends," the Tigard-Tualatin School District said in a statement. 

The cause of death has not been released.

Alderman led the boys basketball team to the 2002 state championship with a 69-59 overtime win over Jesuit. 

"This is heartbreaking news for our community," the district said. "We know this news will affect our students in different ways. Some staff and students may experience a great deal of shock, sadness, anxiety, and anger.  Feeling sad is a normal response to any loss. Any death, even if the person wasn’t known to you, can bring up feelings and emotions related to other losses."

Along with school counselors, the district said it is putting together a team of specially-trained counselors and mental health specialists to support staff and students districtwide and at Tigard High School.
