Water leak closes Wells Fargo Center in downtown Portland

People were turned away from the building Thursday morning, and all elevators in the building were shut down.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Wells Fargo Center in downtown Portland was closed Thursday morning because of a water leak on the 12th floor.

People were turned away from the building Thursday morning. All elevators in the building were shut down.

Shortly after 9 a.m., Wells Fargo, which doesn't own the building, confirmed the building was closed. In a statement to KGW, a spokesperson for the company said it's thankful its nearly 700 employees who work at the building are safe.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Lincoln Property Management, which manages the center, told KGW the building is open. But Wells Fargo had a different take.

"We've been informed that the building remains closed at this time," a spokesperson told KGW.

At 40 stories and 546 feet tall, the Wells Fargo Center is the tallest building in the state. At more than 577,000 square feet, it's also the fourth-largest office building.
