American Shelby Rogers reaches fourth round at French Open

PARIS — Shelby Rogers scored the biggest win of her young career — in one of the more bizarre scorelines you’ll see in a pro tennis match.

PARIS — Shelby Rogers scored the biggest win of her young career — in one of the more bizarre scorelines you’ll see in a pro tennis match.

The South Carolina native took out two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Friday in the third round of the French Open with something known as a “bagel sandwich” in tennis.

What is that, exactly? Read on to find out.

Scoreline: Shelby Rogers (USA) def. [10] Petra Kvitova 6-0, 6-7(3), 6-0

Rogers served up two bagel sets — a 6-0 score — against Kvitova, but over a three-set match, dropping the second set after leading by 6-0 and 4-2. She now faces Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in the fourth round.

What it means: It’s the biggest win of Rogers’ career, though she had beaten a top-10 player before. In 2014 she shocked Genie Bouchard, then the world No. 8, in Montreal, also in bagel-sandwich fashion: 6-0, 2-6, 6-0.

But this one is bigger being at a major, and marks the first time Rogers, 23, is into the fourth round at a Grand Slam. She made the third round of the U.S. Open in September, then missed the Australian Open due to injury.

Ranked No. 108, Rogers was the second-to-last player into the draw and beat No. 17 seed Karolina Pliskova in the first round, then former top-25 player Elena Vesnina in round two.

How it happened: Rogers soared through the first set in just 21 minutes, then let a lead in the second set slip. But after dropping set two to the former world No. 2, Rogers held and broke to open the third and never looked back, raising her arms in triumph when Kvitova netted a final ball. She stayed on Court 2 for several minutes, hugging members of her box before running out on court to wave one more time as she exited.

Key stat: Rogers fired 25 winners to Kvitova’s 21, while the Czech player hit 36 unforced errors. Rogers broke Kvitova seven times in 11 chances on the day.

Dangerous day: 2015 finalist Lucie Safarova was knocked out by another former finalist, Sam Stosur, the 2010 runner-up here. Stosur held her nerve after blowing a 4-1 lead in the third set, beating Safarova, another Czech, 6-3, 6-7(0), 7-5.

Stosur next faces Simona Halep, the 2014 finalist here, who overcame a spirited challenge from rising 18-year-old Naomi Osaka, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

American Jack Sock wasn’t as lucky as compatriot Rogers, upset by Albert Ramos-Vinolas in four hours, 11 minutes on court. That left John Isner, who won in five sets over Teymuraz Gabashvili, as the lone American remaining. Two American men haven’t advanced to the fourth round here since 2001.

Isner next meets Andy Murray, the No. 2 seed, who won in straight sets over Ivo Karlovic after having had two five-setters to start the tournament.

“I feel like I have made the fourth round of slams quite a bit,” said Isner, into a third consecutive round of 16 and sixth in his career. “I have definitely fallen in the round of 16 quite a bit. … But at the same time, I know I'm going to have my hands full, but I think Andy will have his hands full, as well.”

After beating Sock, the Spaniard Ramos-Vinolas kissed the clay, winning 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The world No. 55 beat the No. 23 seed for his first-ever round of 16 berth at a Slam. He had won just four matches at majors in 18 appearances prior.

Notable: Other winners Friday included 2015 Wimbledon finalist Garbiñe Muguruza, Milos Raonic, No. 2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (who came back from two-sets-to-love down to beat Marcos Baghdatis), Richard Gasquet (who defeated Nick Kyrgios), defending champion Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori.

American Sloane Stephens broke her streak of four fourth-round appearances in a row, pummeled by Tsvetana Pironkova, 6-2, 6-1. At one point, Stephens lost 18 points and seven games in a row.

“She played some good tennis, and I couldn't find a way to kind of dig it out,” Stephens said. “I mean, looking back on it, it's really poor on my part. Nothing you can do at this point.”

“She just gave me the mop today,” Stephens added, breaking into a smile.

Bob and Mike Bryan moved on in doubles, as did the No. 1 women’s doubles team, Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza.
