WSDOT to hold open house on SR 500 safety

Crews say the problem with SR 500 has to do with two traffic lights on the busy road: the 42nd and 54th intersections: two stoplights on a 55 mile per hour road, that otherwise has no signals.

VANCOUVER, Wa, -- Thursday, WSDOT is holding an open house from 4-7 p.m. at Roosevelt Elementary School, to talk about ways to improve safety on SR-500.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with WSDOT staff, view concepts, ask questions and provide feedback.

Crews say the problem with SR 500 has to do with two traffic lights on the busy road: the 42nd and 54th intersections.

Over a five-year period, WSDOT says there were nearly 400 crashes at, or around, those two intersections. Most of the crashes were rear-end crashes.

With growing congestion, there are three plans on the table to cut back on crashes. One of the plans involves building cul-de-sacs at Northeast Falk Road/42nd Avenue, and at Northeast Stapleton Road/54th Avenue.

After public input, WSDOT will look for funding this summer. The project could cost $3-8 million.

If you can’t attend the open house, you can voice your opinion online, through May 25.
