Fire at dog daycare in Seattle forces evacuations, some dogs go missing

The fire broke out on the second floor of the Dog Resort. Officials don't believe any dogs were injured in the fire but could have escaped during the evacuation.

SEATTLE — Several dogs were evacuated from a dog daycare in Seattle's SODO neighborhood Monday night when a fire broke out on the second floor of the Dog Resort.

When firefighters originally responded to the scene in the 600 block of South Industrial Way, multiple dogs were still on the loose.

David Cuerpo, the public information officer for the Seattle Fire Department, said the fire was reported by staff just after 8:30 p.m. Staff members then immediately started to evacuate all the dogs and relocated them to a fenced-in, outdoor area.

"All the humans were accounted for, and the dogs were able to escape. Right now, we are working with the operators of the business to see if all the dogs are accounted for," Cuerpo said.

Seattle police officers also responded to the scene. They helped corral any loose dogs and shut down nearby streets as a preventative measure.

The dogs that were not picked up by their owners were taken to the Downtown Dog Lounge on Mercer Street by animal advocates. The volunteers said they think two or three dogs are still missing.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Dog Resort owns another location on Lake City Way that also caught fire earlier this year. The fire caused about $300,000 in damage, according to Seattle Fire. Investigators said it was started by a dryer and ruled an accident. While two dogs had to be taken to the veterinarian to be treated for smoke inhalation, all the dogs survived and recovered.
