Historic elevator in Oregon City damaged; suspect arrested

Police say Evan Bettencourt, 22, kicked the elevator door on Friday night, rendering it inoperable and causing over $1,000 in damages.

OREGON CITY, Oregon — A suspect who police said damaged the historic Oregon City Municipal Elevator late Friday night has been arrested.

Evan Bettencourt, 22, was taken into custody and booked in the Clackamas County Jail for criminal mischief on Saturday afternoon.

Police say Bettencourt is the man seen on video kicking the door, rendering it inoperable. The city said the damage is estimated at over $1,000. A $500 reward was offered to identify the suspect in the case.

The elevator, located at 300 7th St, opened on November 27, 1915. The city says almost the entire population of nearly 3,900 in Oregon City at that time rode the elevator. It was upgraded after a bond was passed by voters in 1952, and the new elevator was dedicated on May 5, 1955.
