PORTLAND, Oregon — A person was struck by a car and killed on Jan. 27 in Southwest Portland's Bridlemile neighborhood, prompting a closure of the surrounding streets for a few hours while police investigated.

Police responded at about 5:32 p.m. to a report of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway at Southwest 56th Avenue, according to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). The news release did not identify the pedestrian.

According to PPB, when officers arrived, they found the pedestrian dead. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. No arrests have been made.

On Feb. 16, police identified the pedestrian as 60-year-old Floyd William Charlan Jr. His family has been notified.

Traffic along Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway was shut down between 56th Avenue and Southwest Shattuck Road for the investigation, police said.

The crash is the fourth traffic related fatality this year in the city of Portland, and the second involving a pedestrian, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision who has not already spoken to police is asked to email crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov with the subject line, ATTN: Traffic Investigations Unit, and reference case number 24-21094.
