Missing hiker found dead near Horsetail Falls identified by sheriff's office

Terina Kaye Chapman, 63, was reported missing Friday night after she did not return from a planned hike, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

OREGON, USA — The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) identified the hiker who was found dead Saturday afternoon after she went missing in the Horsetail Falls area on Friday night.

The hiker's name was Terina Kaye Chapman. She was 63 years old and lived in Southeast Portland, MCSO reported.

A friend reported around 10 p.m. Friday that Chapman had not returned from a planned solo hike at Oneonta Falls, adding that they found her car in the parking lot at Horsetail Falls Trailhead.

The MCSO Green Hornets, a team of deputies, began searching throughout the night, along with the Gresham Police Department with drones. However, Chapman did not have her cell phone on her, "making it impossible to find her location through cell tower pings," the MSCO said.

The search continued into Saturday morning, with multiple agencies, including MSCO, Clackamas County and Mount Wave Search and Rescue teams; the Gresham Police Department; Hood River Crag Rats; and the Oregon Department of Transportation. MSCO said by 10 a.m., there were more than 50 personnel on the ground searching, plus tracking dogs and drones.

At around 12:30 p.m., Chapman was found at the bottom of a cliff near Horsetail Falls Trailhead, MSCO said.

East Old Highway was closed in both directions while Chapman's remains were recovered. The medical examiner came to the scene and will determine the cause of death, MCSO said.
