How to keep your pets safe during Fourth of July fireworks

Experts at the Oregon Humane Society say there are some steps pet owners can take to keep their animals safe.

PORTLAND, Ore — Animal shelters are preparing for a large influx of dogs and cats who run away from home because they’re scared of Fourth of July fireworks.

Experts at the Oregon Humane Society say there are some steps pet owners can take to keep their animals safe:

  • Make sure your pet's collar or harness fits. You don’t want them to slip out of it while fireworks are going off.
  • Make sure your dog or cat has identification and stays inside as much as possible.
  • If your pet wants to hide, let them. Be considerate.
  • Another option is getting your pet a Thundershirt, or something similar. It wraps around them and gives them a calming effect.
