PORTLAND, Oregon — On Wednesday, a man was arrested and indicated for his role in a fatal car crash in Portland's Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood late last year, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).
On Dec. 25, at around 5 p.m., PPB responded to reports of a multi-car crash near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard. When officers arrived, they found one person critically injured, who was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to PPB.
During the initial investigation, it was believed that the deceased, identified as 24-year-old Conner Wells, was the driver of one of the cars. Upon further investigation, it was found that Wells was the passenger, not the driver; the driver was 26-year-old Martell Mason, said Portland police.
On Jan. 26, a Multnomah County grand jury returned a 10-count indictment against Mason, according to PPB.
On March 27, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Mason on a warrant in regards to the indictment. He was taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center and is facing the following charges: first-degree manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, failure to perform the duties of a driver, reckless driving, two counts of assault in the fourth degree, and four counts of recklessly endangering another person.
Anyone with any information regarding the crash is asked to contact the Traffic Investigations Unit at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 23-331614.
