Card 'skimmer' device found at Battle Ground Walmart store

Battle Ground police are asking anyone who made a purchase at the Walmart store on March 3 to check their financial records.

BATTLE GROUND, Wash. — On March 3, employees at a Walmart store located in Battle Ground, Washington found a bank card "skimmer" device attached to a payment terminal at a register, according to the Battle Ground Police Department (BGPD).

Illegal card skimmers are known to read, store, access and gain information encoded on credit or bank cards without permission from the card owner, according to BGPD.

Police said store employees believe that it's possible the skimming device was installed as early as 6 a.m. and remained in place until 10:45 p.m. when the device was found.

BGPD asked that anyone who made a purchase at the Walmart location on March 3 between 6 a.m. and 10:45 p.m. check their bank records. Also, anyone who suspects their financial information has been breached is asked to call 311 to file a report.

This is an ongoing investigation and BGPD said it is working with Walmart to find the suspect in this case.

The agency also said that it's important to be aware when using card payment terminals, and to be mindful of the devices. Especially if they seem suspicious, report it to a store employee. BGPD said to check your bank records and contact your bank if you suspect your card information had been compromised. They also said that checking your credit report is another way to know if someone has opened a credit card in your name.
