A footbridge across West Burnside nearly a reality

The Portland Parks foundation is spearheading an effort to build a $2.5-million pedestrian bridge across West Burnside where the Wildwood trail intersects it.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The city of Portland is about to get a brand-new bridge across West Burnside

The Portland Parks foundation is spearheading an effort to build a $2.5-million pedestrian bridge across West Burnside where the Wildwood trail intersects it.

According to the city, more than 80,000 runners and hikers cross that section of Burnside every year.

Brian Degerness is one of them.

He's been running that stretch of trail for years.

He told us crossing the often-busy Burnside traffic can be a big problem, especially with cars coming around the corner.

"These guys are all going 40 and it's downhill," Degerness said. "They have a hard time stopping when they're coming down, that's for sure."

Degerness said he often has to wait a long time for a break in the traffic or dodge between the cars to get across the three lanes.

The city of Portland has labeled the spot a pedestrian hazard. But the Portland Parks Foundation wants to change that.
