PORTLAND, Ore. -- Exactly 22 years ago it wasn't alarm clocks waking up Oregonians, but a powerful earthquake.

On March 25, 1993, the magnitude 5.6 Scotts Mills earthquake was felt as far north as Seattle, and as far south as Roseburg.

It hit at about 5:30 a.m. and caused about $30 million in damages, including at Molalla High School, a Mount Angel church, and the Capitol rotunda in Salem.

In fact, the quake remains the most destructive in the history of the state in terms of property loss.

No one was killed, but experts say the "Spring Break Quake" was really a wake up call for many people.

They said it serves as a good reminder to be ready for future earthquakes.

The Oregon Office of Emergency Management and the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries recommend preparing in advance for earthquakes and other hazards, making sure you have two weeks of supplies and food.
