PORTLAND -- Several downtown Portland intersections were closed Tuesday morning after multiple reports of smoke coming from the halls of a high-rise apartment building.
A second alarm was called to the fire at 255 SW Harrison St. just before 7:30 a.m. because of the size of the building and the potential for the fire to spread.
Due to the sub-freezing temperatures, residents stayed inside the building's lobby while firefighters were on the scene.
Harrison Street was temporarily closed from Naito Parkway to Southwest 4th Avenue. The Portland Streetcar North/South line was replaced by shuttle buses in the area.
The fire started in an electrical vault on the 21st floor, according to Portland Fire & Rescue. It was extinguished just before 8:30 a.m.
The units on floors 21 through 23 will be without power until the vault can be repaired.
The damage was estimated at $100,000 Tuesday, but could increase, investigators said.
All intersections were reopened and the streetcar was running by Tuesday afternoon.
