Gordon's Fireplace Shop to close after 60 years

Gordon's Fireplace Shop on Northeast 33rd Avenue and Broadway is closing after 60 years in business.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Northeast Portland landmark will soon disappear.

Gordon's Fireplace Shop on Northeast 33rd Avenue and Broadway is closing after 60 years in business.

It's been at its current location since 1990 and featured fireplace parts, furniture and light fixtures.

The owner, Gordon Malafouris tried to sell his business but when no one bought, he decided to retire.

“He is 87 now,” said salesman Cory Westbrook. “The lease ran up and they decided they were going to put up condos and little businesses.”

The building was built in 1916 as a plant for plane parts.

The exact day Gordon’s Fireplace Shop will close is unclear. Employees said it depends on when they sell out of merchandise.

“It could be in three weeks, or it could be in September,” said Westbrook.
