Man accused of stabbing woman, barricading in Portland apartment taken into custody

The woman was stabbed multiple times and went to the MAX stop at East Burnside Street and Southeast 122nd Avenue for help, Portland police said.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man accused of stabbing a woman early Wednesday morning and then barricading himself inside an apartment in Southeast Portland was taken into custody around 10:30 a.m., according to police.

Just before 2:30 a.m., police found the woman with stab wounds at the MAX platform on East Burnside Street and Southeast 122nd Avenue. Police and TriMet both said she was not stabbed at the MAX platform, and that she went to the stop to get help from a person who called 911 on her behalf. The woman was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

Officers were able to identify the suspect and determined that he barricaded himself inside the Ventura Park Plaza apartment complex. Portland police evacuated some residents and ordered others to shelter in place. The man yelled at the officers and threatened to shoot them, Portland police said. Members of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were called in to help. The SERT and CNT teams attempted to negotiate with the man for hours, Portland police said, before they entered the apartment and took him into custody.

Portland police identified the man Wednesday afternoon as Beka Nebi Dekebo, 29. He was booked into Multnomah County jail on charges of second-degree attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon, both with domestic violence enhancements.

Dekebo and the victim know each other, according to Portland police, and there is no ongoing risk to the public.

"I do know that there was some kind of domestic relationship. I don't know to what extent. I don't know if they were married or dating, I don't know," said Derek Carmon with the Portland Police Bureau.

The Southeast 122nd Avenue and East Burnside Street area is back open. MAX Blue Line service to the East 122nd Avenue station was impacted during the standoff, but service has returned to normal.
