1 dead, 1 injured after fight in Salem park leads to shooting, police say

The overnight shooting happened in Wallace Marine Park, police said. Investigators believe an argument at a homeless camp escalated until someone fired a gun.

SALEM, Ore. — One man was killed, and another was injured after a shooting in Salem's Wallace Marine Park early Thursday morning, according to a news release from the Salem Police Department.

The park is on the western bank of the Willamette River in downtown Salem, near the Center Street Bridge.

Officers were called to the north end of the park at around 3 a.m. on a report of a shooting, police said. They found one man dead with a gunshot wound, and another who also had a gunshot wound and was taken to Salem Health with what police described as a not-life-threatening injury.

According to Salem police, an initial investigation found that the incident began as an argument over property at a homeless camp on the north side of the park. One of the men involved fired a gun, hitting the two other men. Police said there were no other weapons involved.

Police later identified the man who died as 29-year-old Charley Allen Hodges. The injured man, who has not been publicly identified, is 25 years old.

On Friday, detectives arrested 23-year-old Arlie Calvin Michael Thompson in connection with the shooting, the Salem Police Department said. The Salem resident will be booked into the Polk County Jail on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping and unlawful use of a weapon.

The park remained closed Thursday morning while investigators reviewed the scene, but it was later reopened to the public.

The initial news release also indirectly referenced social media posts that began circulating about the incident on Thursday morning, declaring that there was "much speculative information" online.

"We ask the public to follow our communications platforms for details concerning this investigation," public information office Angela Hendrick said in a statement.
