Man dead after shooting in Southeast Portland

Police identified the victim as Richard Newman, 58, of Portland. The county medical examiner confirmed that his death was homicide by gunshot wound.

PORTLAND, Oregon — UPDATE: Portland police arrested a suspect, 30-year-old Jessie Garza III, early in the morning on Dec. 29 after a four-hour standoff in which he fired at officers. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder for the Dec. 14 killing of Richard Newman. Read more about the arrest here.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A man is dead following a shooting in Southeast Portland's Centennial neighborhood early Thursday morning, according to Portland police.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at 1:24 a.m. in an apartment in the area of Southeast Bush Street and Southeast 166th Avenue. They found a man when they arrived and he was taken to a hospital in an ambulance. Portland police said the man died "despite lifesaving attempts."

Police later identified the man as 58-year-old Richard Newman of Portland, saying that the county medical examiner confirmed that his death was a homicide by gunshot wound. His family has been notified of his death.

The suspect, or the suspects, had already left when the officers arrived, Portland police said. Officers didn't immediately arrest anyone.

The building where the shooting was reported appears to be a fourplex, according to KGW reporter Devon Haskins, who was at the scene.
