PORTLAND, Oregon — Police have identified the man who died in a shooting just after midnight Wednesday in Portland's Nob Hill neighborhood.

The victim was 17-year-old Javaun R. Johnson of Beaverton, according to a Thursday news release from the Portland Police Bureau. The county medical examiner has confirmed his cause of death to be homicide by gunshot.

Officers from the Central Precinct were called to a report of a shooting at 12:10 a.m. on Northwest Trinity Place just off of West Burnside Street, according to a previous news release from the Portland Police Bureau. The officers found a man who had been shot, and they attempted life-saving measures, but he died at the scene.

Portland police homicide detectives responded to investigate, and the entirety of Northwest Trinity Place was closed during the investigation, along with a portion of Northwest Everett Street at the north end of the block. The street could be seen roped off with caution tape at the intersection with Burnside early Wednesday morning.

PPB initially said it would withhold the victim's name until their cause of death had been confirmed and their family had been notified. The subsequent PPB news release on Thursday did not include any additional details about the circumstances of the shooting or whether police are pursuing any suspects.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Calvin Goldring at 503-823-0256 or Detective Brad Clifton at 503-823-0696 and reference case number 23-327113.

This is a developing story and will be updated if more information becomes available.
