'Most generous person I have ever met': Community remembers Bob Moore, founder of Bob's Red Mill

A celebration of life was held Saturday to remember Bob Moore, the founder of Bob's Red Mill. Moore passed away at the age of 94 in early February.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. — A celebration of life honored Bob Moore, the founder of Bob's Red Mill, at his Milwaukie store and restaurant on Saturday.

Moore passed away earlier this month at the age of 94. Current and former employees, along with members of the community, came out to remember Moore and the impact he had on the area.

Created in 1978, the Milwaukie-based company began just serving Portland, but quickly grew into a national brand, which offers over 200 products in more than 70 countries, according to the company.

The celebration of life was held at the Bob’s Red Mill Store in Milwaukie, with Moore’s favorite band playing jazz and with Moore's favorite food, oatmeal, being served.

"Bob hired me in 2005 to be his executive assistant, and I worked with him about every day for the last 19 years,” recalled Nancy Garner.

“The man had a vision," she continued. "The man was the most generous person I have ever met. On his 81st birthday, as most people know, he gave one-third of the company to his employees, and then, over the next ten years, we became 100% employee-owned."

“Bob is truly missed; his products are amazing," said Maggie Condon, a friend of Moore. "I just think the world of him; I love the oatmeal, especially. I just felt confident in buying his products because they are so natural."

"Bob was a very exceptional man who was able to combine a strong vision and a love of people. Many times, those things don't go together, but Bob was able to do that," Christie Coykendeall told KGW.

“We will continue to do the best we can to honor Bob, and the company's legacy is in great hands with our 700 employee owners," added Cassidy Stockton, Bob’s Red Mill's senior marketing communications manager.

Moore is survived by his three sons, Ken, Bob Jr. and David; daughters-in-law Dora, Barbara, Ashleigh and Terry; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
