Why Pacific Northwest farmers are expecting a good Christmas tree harvest this season

Christmas tree farmers say the rain this fall has helped their harvest.

So just how good is this year’s Christmas tree harvest in the Pacific Northwest?

At Trout Creek Farm in Corbett, one local Christmas tree farmer says he’s expecting a good harvest for all this year.

“All of the growers are going to have a pretty good year; there was some impact in August because we had those really hot days," recalled Tom Norby, owner of Trout Creek Tree Farm.

There may have been a little concern during that heat wave, but what turned things around were the rains during the last couple of months. Portland has already seen nearly 5 inches of rain for the month so far.

“We’ve had this wet fall, so that means trees have been able to soak up a lot of moisture, and we got rain in September and October — the trees have a lot of moisture in them right now,” Norby said.

While his crew has been getting ready for a busy season, so have employees at Cornell Farm off of Barnes Road.

“They stated already, and we’re feeling very confident how the season is going to be,” said owner Deby Barnhart.

It’s this time of year that has those like Norby thankful for a good season. Norby said that just in Oregon alone, there is about a $110 million farm revenue a year, and he thinks that number is under-inflated.
