Hundreds of Nike shoes have washed up on beaches around the world, and some think a cargo ship spill is the cause.

The shoe sightings first started in September 2018 in the Atlantic archipelago of the Azores.

In the months that followed, shoes continued to wash up on beaches in France, Bermuda and the United Kingdom.

Many are convinced that the shoes came from a container ship called the Maersk Shanghai. The ship was traveling from Virginia to South Carolina in 2018 when it lost dozens of containers during a storm off the North Carolina coast.

When BBC reached out to Nike about the shoes, the company declined to comment.

The Marine Conservation Society says the shoes will impact ocean wildlife as they break down into micro-plastics over time.
