For pumpkin-picking fun, Sauvie Island has you covered

Pumpkin pickers flocked to The Pumpkin Patch in Sauvie Island, as the farm winds down for the year.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Sauvie Island is home to the original pumpkin patch.

The 22-acre pumpkin field has over 20 types of pumpkins growing on it, according to Joe Kellogg, one of the farm's managers and brother in law to the farmer who runs the farm.

"It's a lot of pumpkins, over two million pounds is what we've estimated of pumpkins out there," Kellogg said. "Every day I hear people say, 'We’ve been coming out here with my family for 30 years, 25 years,' so you know, it’s just that family tradition, people know that they are going to be able to come out here and have a good time. It’s very family friendly."

Kellogg said it's been a good year for pumpkin growing and the great weather has helped a lot.

He said what helps their farm stand out from others is the quality of the produce.

"It’s hard to match anywhere else, just because my brother in law, the farmer’s been doing this for a long time; he knows how to grow good produce," Kellogg said.

People were excited to be out picking their own pumpkins, but there were also options for those who wanted to have fun in other ways too.

"I'm really excited to hang out with my friends and go into the corn maze," said one member of Club Everyone, Me and You, a social club for neurodiverse adults and teenagers 16 year and older.

President of the club, John Davis, said the farm has been amazing about letting them come out as a large group for around the last five years.

Other children enjoyed the cow train that was also at the farm, and both kids and adults enjoyed the barn, especially the alpaca.

The farm is open seven days a week for people to come and enjoy themselves.

A corn maze,  hayride, gift shop, cafe and produce market are also open for fun on the grounds as well.

The farm closes to the public on Oct. 31, but will reopen in June in time for berry picking.
