PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon drivers will soon have a new license plate option.

The Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute said it sold its 3,000th voucher for its gray whale license plates earlier this week, which means the DMV will begin producing the plates.

The plate shows a drawing of a gray whale mother and her calf along the coast, with a lighthouse in the background, and reads “Coastal Playground.”

Gray whales migrate from the arctic to Mexico each year, passing along the Oregon coast.

“There has been a great deal of enthusiasm from Oregonians for the new plates – not only because of how striking they are, but also because they will help fund whale conservation efforts,” said Bruce Mate, who directs the Marine Mammal Institute.

The plates will be available during the first quarter of 2019, the institute said.

How to Get Your Plates

  • Purchase a voucher online for $40. $35 will support the OSU Marine Mammal Institute.
  • When the plates are ready, the institute will notify you that you can go to the DMV to exchange your voucher for your new whale plates.
