PORTLAND, Ore. – Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords joined Oregon state and former law enforcement leaders in Portland on Friday afternoon for a roundtable discussion on the need for more laws to protect communities from gun violence.
"Stopping gun violence takes courage. The courage to do what's right. The courage of new ideas," Giffords said. "We must never stop fighting."
Giffords, who was shot in the head while hosting an event at an Arizona grocery store in 2011, also was on hand for the announcement of the “Oregon Coalition for Common Sense.” The coalition will advocate for keeping guns out of the hands of those in a mental health crisis, and keeping guns safely stored in homes where children are around, according to a news release.
The roundtable discussion was held at the YWCA of Greater Portland.
Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill, former Portland police chief Michael Reese and former Hillsboro police chief Ron Louis are among those who attended the roundtable discussion.
