Move over PDX carpet, airport benches get new life as modern furniture

More than 300 of the 30-year-old benches are being re-purposed into modern seats, couches, love-seats and tables.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Move over PDX carpet, there's another piece of Portland airport history that is getting a new life.

And there's a pretty good chance you've rested your bottom on it. We're talking about all those old airport benches.

More than 300 of the 30-year-old benches are being re-purposed into modern seats, couches, love-seats and tables.

Ryan Widell, Ben Vickers and Steve Mike formed the company PDXoriginals to transform the old benches.

After buying the seats last year, the trio went to work polishing, re-upholstering and re-imagining them.

The result is a contemporary/mid-century style furniture that brings back lots of fun memories.

"These are the most sat in seats in the history of the state of Oregon," said Widell. "Maybe 50, maybe 80 million butts have sat on these chairs and they evoke so much storytelling."

The company also recently teamed up with local designers to create ten custom benches. They will be auctioning off those special benches at the end of May.

All the proceeds raised will go to New Avenues for Youth, a nonprofit aimed at ending youth homelessness.

The company will also be hosting an open house at their Southeast Portland warehouse Friday evening so people can check out the pieces for themselves.
