Here are the 31 highest-paid professions in Portland

Health care workers continue to have it best when it comes to salaries.

So reveals the latest data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The group, which collects a variety of employment related figures, found that eight of the top 10 highest paid worker categories toil in the health services sector.

The Business Journal crunched the numbers to determine the highest-paid professions, by annual salary.

The highest mean-salaried jobs reported by the BLS belong to obstetricians and gynecologists, who make a mean $125.33 hourly wage.

The figures cover the Portland metropolitan statistical area, which includes Hillsboro and Vancouver, Wash.

According to the Oregon Employment Department, the "Education and Health Services" category is one of the fastest-growing sectors in terms of adding jobs within the state, with the category growing by about 10 percent over last year.

The Employment Department also revealed that the paychecks for health care and social assistance workers grew the most, in terms of overall dollars, between February 2017 and February 2018.

Office and administrative support workers, which comprise the largest single work category, earn average annual salaries of $40,320, or less than 20 percent of what the highest-paid workers earn.

The numbers are from May 2017, the last date such data was released. And, in the sense of full disclosure, the BLS data indicates that print journalists, who appear to fall in the "Newspaper, Periodical, Book and Directory Publishers" category, earn $27.38 an hour, or $56,940.
