ALBANY, Ore. – Detectives on Friday arrested a West Albany High School teacher on suspicion of attempted sex abuse and luring a minor.

James Walter Myrick, 28, used his position as a teacher to try to coerce a 17-year-old female student into sexual contact with him, according to Albany police Captain Eric Carter.

The investigation began six weeks ago when a student reported concerns that Myrick was having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Detectives arrested Myrick at his Albany home and took him to the Linn County Jail. Myrick faces charges of attempted sex abuse (3rd degree), official misconduct, luring a minor, tampering with a witness and coercion.

Police say they have reason to believe that there are other victims who have not come forward.

Anyone with information about the case or Myrick is asked to call the Albany Police Detective Unit at (541) 917-7686.
