‘Armed and dangerous’ man shot at by Gresham police following chase identified

Police identified the suspect on Saturday as 36-year-old Vasile Manta. A warrant is out for Manta's arrest for attempted aggravated murder

GRESHAM, Ore. -- Gresham police are still searching for a man who rammed a police vehicle with a stolen minivan on April 30, prompting a large manhunt that continued into the next morning.

Police identified the suspect on Saturday as 36-year-old Vasile Manta. A warrant is out for Manta's arrest for attempted aggravated murder. He was described as a 5-foot-10, 180-pound white man with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone who sees Manta is asked to call 911. Anyone with information regarding Manta's whereabouts is asked to call Gresham police at 503-618-2719.

Investigators previously located a man believed to be the suspect, but determined he was not involved in the chase that led to a Gresham police officer firing his weapon.

The chase began when an officer spotted a stolen van in a parking lot near Southwest Highland Drive and 11th Street. The suspect rammed the officer's vehicle and drove away, police said.

The minivan became stuck on a median near Southeast 174th Avenue and Powell Boulevard. That's when the suspect, who police say was armed, fled on foot and an officer fired at him.
