PORTLAND, Ore. — This week, Portland entered a three-day stretch of warm, sunny weather for the first time this spring, following a mostly wet and cold season.

Downtown Portland hit 80 degrees Thursday afternoon for the first time this year. The last time Portland experienced an 80 degree day was September 25, 2021. This was the first year since 2011 that Portland saw zero 80-degree days before June 1, according to KGW Meteorologist Rod Hill.

To put the forecast into some perspective, Hill said on May 31 of 2021, Portland climbed to a high of 88 degrees and soared to 95 degrees on June 1. He also noted that 2021 saw 10 days of 80-degree weather before the month of June.

The stretch of dry, warm weather began Tuesday, May 31, with a high of 78 degrees. Wednesday was just shy of 80 degrees, topping out at a high of 79.

Despite the warm temperatures, the Willamette and Columbia rivers are still running on the cold side for those thinking about jumping in area lakes and rivers.

“We’re still running right around 57 degrees on the Columbia and Willamette River, so our waters are considered cold waters and can be a shock to the system,” said Sergeant Stephen Dangler with Multnomah County Sheriff's River Patrol. He added that the Sandy River is even cooler, with temperatures still in the 40s.

Friday highs are forecasted in the low 70s with possible showers. Wet and cooler weather returns this weekend, with temperatures expected to drop back down to the 60s on Saturday and Sunday.
