More than 3 feet of snow could dump on Mount Hood

Mount Hood will see anywhere from 20-40 inches of snow by Tuesday, depending on elevation, says KGW meteorologist Rod Hill.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Mount Hood will see anywhere from 20-40 inches of snow by Tuesday, depending on elevation, according to KGW meteorologist Rod Hill.

"Mount Hood snowfall tonight through Tuesday night may reach 20 inches at Government Camp," Hill said. "And closer to 40 inches at 5,000 feet and higher."

Above 2,500 feet Highway 26 turned from wet to slushy to snow-packed. Semi-truck drivers had to chain up. But for the most part, it was clear sailing for drivers.

That’s partly thanks to the constant work of Oregon Department of Transportation crews.

“Everybody has to work. So, its full staff, no days off. Just go, go, go,” said plow driver Jim Peterson.

The base of Mount Hood Meadows is at about 5,400 feet, and Timberline is about 4,850 feet.

Hood River and The Dalles were expected to get several feet of snow through Wednesday but by Monday morning Hill said it was above freezing and raining in Hood River. Nine inches fell overnight Sunday.
