ODOT said the freeway was expected to be closed for several hours between Pendleton and Ontario because of multiple semi-truck crashes.

PENDLETON, Ore. — Multiple semi-truck crashes closed Interstate 84 in both directions Tuesday in Eastern Oregon.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) said eastbound lanes of I-84 were closed at exit 216 near Pendleton. Westbound lanes were closed at exit 374 in Ontario.

The westbound closure was extended from exit 304 in Baker City due to limited truck parking at that exit. Local residents trying to get to Huntington or Baker City from Ontario may be able to go westbound by showing identification at exit 371.

At about 2 p.m., ODOT said the stretch of freeway is expected to be closed more than four hours, with icy roads and winter conditions throughout the area.

The truck crashes were reported near milepost 270 and 258 in the westbound lanes. Because the blockage is preventing ODOT winter maintenance crews from returning after treating snow and ice on the eastbound freeway, both freeways are closed.

There was no word on injuries or the cause of either crash.

Westbound truck traffic is restricted from traveling west from Ontario due to limited truck parking in Baker City, ODOT said in a press release.

OR 204 and OR 245 are also closed to thru traffic and are not viable detours for freeway traffic.
