Terry Porter introduced as University of Portland men's basketball coach

Former Portland Trail Blazers star Terry Porter was officially introduced as the men's basketball coach at the University of Portland at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Former Portland Trail Blazers star Terry Porter was officially introduced as the men's basketball coach at the University of Portland at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

The university announced last week that Porter would be the next head coach.

"I'm so blessed for this opportunity," Porter said. "We will perform with passion, perseverance and Portland Pilot pride."

Porter said his experience playing for his college coach, Dick Bennett, inspired him to coach college basketball.

"I want to be able to shape other young men's lives," he said.

The school said in March that Eric Reveno would not return as coach after 10 years at the helm. The Pilots went 12-20 last season and finished eighth in the 10-team West Coast Conference.

Porter was the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks from 2003-05 and coached the Phoenix Suns during part of the 2008-09 season. He has also been an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Porter played for the Blazers for 10 seasons and made two All-Star appearances while in Rip City. He'll be the third former Blazer to coach at the University of Portland. Larry Steele and Michael Holton both previously coached the Pilots.
