Girls thriving in Portland youth hockey programs

Hundreds of teenagers are playing the game as part of the Jr. Winterhawks and the Rose City Hockey Club.

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Youth hockey is growing in popularity in the Portland area.

Hundreds of teenagers are playing the game as part of the Jr. Winterhawks and the Rose City Hockey Club.

Earlier this month, girls from the Jr. Winterhawks and the Rose City Hockey Club joined forces to form two travel teams. The Under 12 and Under 14 teams went to San Jose, California for a three-day tournament. Both teams had a great time. The U12 team went undefeated and won their division.

AJ Clarke plays for the U12 team and loves the game.

“I mostly like skating and I like that it’s a team sport,” she said.

Coach Robin Willins says “we’re trying to build pathways to accomplish whatever goals they have.”
