PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jason Collins, the first openly gay athlete in the NBA, is campaigning in Portland Friday on behalf of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Collins retired in November 2014 from the Brooklyn Nets, after coming out in a Sports Illustrated article 18 months earlier.

Collins has become a high-profile advocate on behalf of gay-rights issues. He is scheduled to appear at Terrell Brandon's Barbershop in Northeast Portland on Friday afternoon followed by an appearance at the Hillary for Oregon LGBT for Hillary Happy Hour at Scandals Bar in downtown Portland.

He will also be a guest on KGW's Straight Talk program, which airs Sunday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m.

Collins' appearance follows by one day a visit to the Rose City by ex-President Bill Clinton who appeared at several events in Portland in support of his candidate wife.
