PORTLAND, Ore. — A runoff election will be held August 11 between two candidates to fill former Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish’s seat after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote for Portland Commissioner Position No. 2.
But it wasn't clear even the day after the election which candidates that would be.
As of noon on Wednesday, Loretta Smith was in the lead with more than 35,000 votes, or about 19%. Dan Ryan had more than 31,000 votes, or nearly 17%, and in third place was Tera Hurst with more than 27,000 votes, about 14.6%.
The top two finishers after all the votes are counted will be headed to the August election.
Fish died in January after a two-year battle with cancer. He was elected to a four-year term in 2018.
Whoever wins the special election will serve as commissioner through 2022.
